SUMMARY:Program: Riverside Park Kind Outreach & Rescue Pilot
DESCRIPTION:In this second year of the pilot\, Lead Bird Steward Cindy Corey and daughter Calder will share highlights from the season\, including the number of birds rescued\, species encountered\, successes\, challenges\, and lessons learned while protecting wildlife in an urban environment. \nAlthough Riverside Park is not an ideal nesting site for waterbirds\, birds continue to use the area\, creating both opportunities and management challenges. This talk will explore how collaboration and community engagement support coexistence between people and wildlife. \nThe project is a partnership between JaxParks\, Sierra Club Northeast Florida Group\, Duval Audubon Society\, and Timucuan Parks Foundation\, all working toward a shared vision of an urban park where humans and wildlife can thrive together.

DESCRIPTION:Calling all young birders! Join us for an exciting outing at Crosby Sanctuary! \nJoin us for an outing at Crosby Sanctuary on Sunday\, March 22nd from 8-10am\, where we’ll have special access for our group! Owned by Duval Audubon Society\, Crosby Sanctuary is a limited-access nature preserve that is home to a full biodiversity of native plants\, mammals\, birds\, reptiles\, amphibians and invertebrates. FYBC is a membership organization geared towards young birders ages 9-17\, but you do not need to be a member to go birding with us for this outing. This walk will be led by Will Misner\, youth representative of the FYBC-Northeast Florida Chapter\, and David Doran\, Duval Audubon Society’s Director of Education and Youth Outreach. \nBirds abound! Crosby Sanctuary is an important breeding site for the Prothonotary Warbler\, which returns from Central America each year. Rusty Blackbirds have also been seen there occasionally during wintering and migration periods. It is now part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. \nResident birds include Pileated Woodpecker\, Brown Pelican\, Double-crested Cormorant\, Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Snowy Egret\, Little Blue Heron\, Tricolored Heron\, Clapper Rail\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Black-crowned Night Heron\, vultures\, Osprey\, Eastern Screech Owl\, Great Horned Owl\, Barred Owl\, and many more. \nLocation: 11676 Palmetto Ave\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226. No fee. \nDirections: From I-95 or I-295 East Beltway\, exit at Heckscher Drive and go east. After passing the St. Johns River Ferry landing on your right\, turn left 1/2 mile later at the brown National Park Service sign onto Fort George Island. Follow the signs on the road leading to the Kingsley Plantation parking lot. You will travel down a 2-mile dirt road. Restrooms are available at this site.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, April 20th from 6:00–7:30 PM at the Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park Nature Center for an informative and timely presentation.\n\nWe are pleased to welcome Mary Reed from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services\, Division of Plant Industry\, who will speak on the newly detected invasive species\, the Yellow-Legged Hornet (YLH).\n\nFirst identified in Savannah\, Georgia in 2023 and later in South Carolina in 2024\, this species is a significant predator of honeybees and other beneficial insects\, posing a serious threat to pollinator populations. While the Yellow-Legged Hornet has not yet been detected in Florida\, FDACS-DPI is actively conducting surveys in the northeastern region of the state due to its proximity to confirmed sightings.\n\nThis presentation will cover:\n\n– The history and biology of the Yellow-Legged Hornet– How to identify hornets and locate their nests– Steps to take if you suspect a sighting\n\nOur goal is to raise awareness and support early detection efforts within the community.\n\nWe hope you can join us for this important discussion!

This should be a great opportunity to see and hear birds and their fledglings. \nElizabeth Filippelli and Cindy Corey of Duval Audubon Society and Lisa Williams from Sierra Club Northeast Florida will present a program on what you can do to save our migrating birds and our local bird population. Learn about the perils of artificial light pollution and how reflective glass is impacting our migrating birds. Learn what you can do to support Lights Out; taking action at your own home. \nAfterwards\, we will have a guided walk through the park listening and learning about the birds that make it their home. We will also learn about the Riverside Park Kind Outreach and Rescue Pilot and the ongoing plans to create a more wildlife friendly environment for our own native birds. Cindy is a life-long wildlife advocate and volunteers as a Collision Monitor for Lights Out Northeast Florida\, surveying the birds that have been killed or injured by hitting the reflective glass in Downtown Jacksonville. \nLisa Williams has been a member of the Sierra Club for decades and served as a member of the SCNEF Executive Committee for 10 years. She is currently the Program Chair\, and author of the monthly series\, Planting with a Purpose. Acopian Bird Savers (paracords hung 4 inches apart on the outside of reflective windows) are very effective at preventing window strikes. DESCRIPTION:We all know that birding during the summer months in Florida can be challenging. Excessive heat\, energy-sapping humidity\, unpredictable weather\, and the (what seems like) millions of mosquitoes can dissuade any birder from venturing outside to find cool birds. But some of our area’s most interesting bird sightings have occurred during the summer months. It’s a great time to spot Bobwhite Quail\, Yellow-billed Cuckoos\, Black-necked Stilts\, Hudsonian Whimbrels\, and nesting Least and Black Terns\, to name just a few. \nEnter the June Challenge! The June Challenge is a friendly competition designed to keep us birding through the summer heat while non-birders retreat indoors and miss all the fun. The aim of the competition is for individual contestants to see as many bird species as possible within the boundaries of their county between June 1st and June 30th. \nThe rules are simple: try to see (heard-only birds don’t count for the challenge) as many different bird species in your home county as you can during the month of June. (Doing more than one county is permissible\, but each must be reported separately.) At the end of the month\, report your species totals on the June Challenge website\, where you can see the results a few weeks later. \nThe fun starts June 1st\, so get outside and go birding!

Hanna Park features maritime hammock\, freshwater lakes\, coastal dunes\, and 1.5 miles of Atlantic beach. It offers excellent birding opportunities in the beginning of fall migration\, with a variety of shorebirds\, wading birds\, raptors\, and songbirds found throughout its diverse habitats. More than 275 different species of birds have been recorded at the park\, according to eBird. \nPay the $5 entrance fee at the park gate\, then turn right immediately and take the dirt road back to the picnic/playground area. Meet the group in the parking lot to sign in and start the search for some great birds! Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes to bird along the trails. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, a hat\, bug spray\, sunscreen\, water\, and snacks.

Birders have recorded nearly 150 different species of birds at this eBird hotspot\, and with fall songbird migration just beginning\, there is a good chance to see a variety of species like Black-and-white Warbler\, American Redstart\, Red-eyed Vireo\, and many others. \nMeet leaders Johnna and Brook at the Nature Center at 9 am to sign in and get ready to find some birds! The group will walk the easy 1-mile trail from the Nature Center to the Observation Tower and back\, so make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. Also bring your binoculars\, a hat\, bug spray\, and water to drink. It is now part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. \nResident birds include Pileated Woodpecker\, Brown Pelican\, Double-crested Cormorant\, Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Snowy Egret\, Little Blue Heron\, Tricolored Heron\, Clapper Rail\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Black-crowned Night Heron\, vultures\, Osprey\, Eastern Screech Owl\, Great Horned Owl\, Barred Owl\, and many more. \nLocation: 11676 Palmetto Ave\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226. No fee. \nDirections: From I-95 or I-295 East Beltway\, exit at Heckscher Drive and go east. After passing the St. Johns River Ferry landing on your right\, turn left 1/2 mile later at the brown National Park Service sign onto Fort George Island.
