SUMMARY:Morning Coffee With The Birds II
DESCRIPTION:You must register to participate in this event: https://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?formcampaignid=701Po00001WpoUdIAJ \nBring your morning Joe or a cup of tea and spend a morning with the birds at one of Jacksonville’s prominent urban parks\, Riverside Park. The birds are in nesting season. This should be a great opportunity to see and hear birds and their fledglings. \nElizabeth Filippelli and Cindy Corey of Duval Audubon Society and Lisa Williams from Sierra Club Northeast Florida will present a program on what you can do to save our migrating birds and our local bird population. Learn about the perils of artificial light pollution and how reflective glass is impacting our migrating birds. Learn what you can do to support Lights Out; taking action at your own home. \nAfterwards\, we will have a guided walk through the park listening and learning about the birds that make it their home. We will also learn about the Riverside Park Kind Outreach and Rescue Pilot and the ongoing plans to create a more wildlife friendly environment for our own native birds. The Pilot is a coalition of conservation partners including Duval Audubon\, Sierra Club Northeast Florida\, COJ Parks\, FWS\, Friends of Riverside Park\, TIMU and IXIA Native Plant Society. \nSierra Club Northeast Florida will provide rolls and or snacks. Please bring your coffee in tea in a reusable cup that you can take back home with you. \nPlease register and sign your Sierra Club liability waiver now at:\nhttps://act.sierraclub.org/events/details?formcampaignid=701Po00001WpoUdIAJ \nOur Presenters: Elizabeth Filippelli is currently serving as Vice President\, Director of Conservation for Duval County\, and Co-Lead of the Lights Out Northeast Florida initiative for Duval Audubon Society. SUMMARY:Program: Newly Detected Invasive Species
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, April 20th from 6:00–7:30 PM at the Tillie K. Fowler Regional Park Nature Center for an informative and timely presentation.\n\nWe are pleased to welcome Mary Reed from the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services\, Division of Plant Industry\, who will speak on the newly detected invasive species\, the Yellow-Legged Hornet (YLH).\n\nFirst identified in Savannah\, Georgia in 2023 and later in South Carolina in 2024\, this species is a significant predator of honeybees and other beneficial insects\, posing a serious threat to pollinator populations. While the Yellow-Legged Hornet has not yet been detected in Florida\, FDACS-DPI is actively conducting surveys in the northeastern region of the state due to its proximity to confirmed sightings.\n\nThis presentation will cover:\n\n– The history and biology of the Yellow-Legged Hornet– How to identify hornets and locate their nests– Steps to take if you suspect a sighting\n\nOur goal is to raise awareness and support early detection efforts within the community.\n\nWe hope you can join us for this important discussion!

Please ONLY drive on the beach if your vehicle is appropriately equipped and at your discretion. \nWinter birding can be especially productive with an excellent diversity of birds and much lower traffic on the beach. Targets include overwintering gulls\, terns\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds\, including the rare-in-Florida Purple Sandpipers and the rare-but-local Saltmarsh Sparrows. Other potential targets include Scoters\, Northern Gannets\, Piping and Snowy Plovers\, Nelson’s Sparrow\, and the Ash-throated Flycatcher. \nEntry to Huguenot Park is $5 per vehicle. Participants should bring water\, sunscreen\, binoculars\, and comfortable footwear for walking in soft\, sometimes wet\, uneven sands. Waterproof footwear is recommended. \nIf you choose to stay after Huguenot\, we will break for lunch at noon. Bring your own food or eat at a nearby restaurant\, such as Billy Jacks (BBQ)\, and carry on to other locations. \nThere are multiple options nearby Huguenot for afternoon trips within a 15-minute drive radius\, including Big Talbot/Spoonbill Pond\, Little Talbot\, Fort George Island/Kingsley Plantation\, Heritage River Road. Spoonbill Pond may have a chance for Marbled Godwits and Marsh Sparrows during high tide. Fort George Island is a nice drive-through for Painted Buntings. A ferry ride ($6 per person) can also take you across the river\, or you can drive around for access to Hanna Park\, Jax Arboretum\, Theodore Roosevelt Park\, Spanish Pond\, and Fort Caroline. Jax Beach Pier is a further drive but a good location for sea ducks. \n\nLocation – Huguenot Memorial Park\, 10980 Heckscher Dr\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226\n\nHow to find us: meet in the parking lot to consolidate cars. \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Duval Audubon Society | Florida Young Birders Club Bird Walk at Fort Caroline National Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Duval Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding outing for the Florida Young Birders Club (FYBC)-Northeast Florida Chapter at Fort Caroline National Memorial on Sunday\, December 7th from 9-11am. FYBC is a membership organization geared towards young birders ages 9-17\, but you do not need to be a member to go birding with us for this outing. This walk will be led by Will Misner\, youth representative of the FYBC-Northeast Florida Chapter\, and David Doran\, Duval Audubon Society’s Director of Education and Youth Outreach. \nYou can learn more about Florida Young Birders Club\, here: floridayoungbirders.org. If we have time\, we may venture across the road to Spanish Pond\, where we may find Clapper Rails and other wetland birds and wildlife. \nRegister at https://tinyurl.com/fybcfortcaroline to connect with other young birders in Northeast Florida! \nPlease plan to have at least one adult joining each young birder or group of young birders who are signing up together. You will be asked to list all young birder(s) and adult(s) in your registration; you may relist the adult’s email if a young birder does not have an email or prefers not to share it. \nWhat to bring: Wear weather-appropriate clothing — it can get breezy by the Fort! — and sturdy shoes to bird along the 1 mile Hammock Trail loop. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, water\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, and snacks. There is no entrance fee. \nWhere to meet: Meet at Fort Caroline National Memorial’s Visitor’s Center at 9am. There is a restroom at the Visitor Center\, if needed. PLEASE NOTE: EARLY ARRIVALS WILL HAVE TO WAIT OUTSIDE THE PARK GATE UNTIL THE GATE OPENS AT 9 AM. \nAddress: 12713 Fort Caroline Road\, Jacksonville\, FL 32225 \nQuestions: Contact David at david.doran@duvalaudubon.org or Will at misnerwill@gmail.com.
