DESCRIPTION:Duval Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding outing for the Florida Young Birders Club (FYBC)-Northeast Florida Chapter at Fort Caroline National Memorial on Sunday\, December 7th from 9-11am. FYBC is a membership organization geared towards young birders ages 9-17\, but you do not need to be a member to go birding with us for this outing. This walk will be led by Will Misner\, youth representative of the FYBC-Northeast Florida Chapter\, and David Doran\, Duval Audubon Society’s Director of Education and Youth Outreach. \nYou can learn more about Florida Young Birders Club\, here: floridayoungbirders.org. Fort Caroline is a migration hot spot and part of the National Park Service’s Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve\, some of the last untouched coastal habitat in northeast Florida. Along the Hammock Trail\, we may spot migratory songbirds\, while wading birds and raptors may be seen from the Fort. If we have time\, we may venture across the road to Spanish Pond\, where we may find Clapper Rails and other wetland birds and wildlife. \nRegister at https://tinyurl.com/fybcfortcaroline to connect with other young birders in Northeast Florida! \nPlease plan to have at least one adult joining each young birder or group of young birders who are signing up together. DESCRIPTION:The gates to Crosby Sanctuary will be open from 8-12 for visitors to enjoy the bird garden and walk the trails\, as well as for volunteers to conduct projects and maintenance. Please parallel park on Aquarius Concourse on the same side of the road as the Sanctuary. \nCrosby Sanctuary (limited access/no fee) is a “hotspot” on eBird and a “project” on iNaturalist. We have documented over 150 bird species on eBird and 300 plant species on iNaturalist. We also have active North American beavers on the property. \nIMPORTANT: Please wear close-toed shoes or boots (for your safety\, no sandals or flip-flops\, please)\, and bring your own water\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a hat if desired. \nYou can access a printable map of the preserve here. \nNOTE: The entrance is in the middle of the neighborhood – please park inside the gate (limit six vehicles) or on the NW side of the street (same side as the sanctuary).

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers at Camp Blanding WMA
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Allan Hallman (FWC) \nCamp Blanding WMA is 56\,197 acres located in western Clay County\, east of Starke. The northern half of the area is planted pine plantations with remnant mature pines that support red-cockaded woodpeckers. Bottomland hardwood forests occur along the headwaters of Black Creek. The southern half of the area includes several thousand acres of sandhills\, with plentiful white-tailed deer and turkey. \nOur main purpose for this trip is to visit a cluster site and learn about the life of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Other birds we will look for: Red-headed Woodpecker\, Kestrel\, Sandhill Cranes\, Brown-headed Nuthatch\, and Northern Bobwhite Quail. \nVisiting the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers is usually 2-3 hours. We will then proceed to travel across to Camp Blanding where we will visit the many lakes and learn about the water systems of Camp Blanding and look for waterfowl. This optional activity usually wraps up around 2:00 pm. \nWhere to meet: We are meeting at the intersection of Barker Rd and SR 16 at 8:00 am\, across the street from the main entrance of Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. \nPLEASE DON’T BE LATE as the gates will be locked after entry. Once we sign in and drive into the WMA\, there will not be another restroom. \nDO NOT GO TO THE CAMP BLANDING MAIN ENTRANCE! FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO OUR MEETING SPOT: \nComing from Jacksonville:\nTake Blanding Blvd (SR21) south through Orange Park\, and Middleburg. Continue south on SR 21 until you get to the intersection of SR 16 and SR 21. Turn Right (Heading west). Go approximately 4 miles to Barker Road (north side of road\, just east of the main gate of Camp Blanding). We will meet there\, then figure out riding options. \nComing from Starke:\nTake SR 16 east from Starke. Continue East until you reach Camp Blanding past the junction of CR230 and CR 225 (From Lawtey). Pass the Sunoco Gas station on the right. Go approximately 1 mile\, turn LEFT onto Barker Road (FWC – Camp Blanding WMA sign – Green in color). There is a gate there\, which will be open for the group. \nFrom Keystone Heights:\nTake CR 21 (Blanding Blvd) NORTH until you hit SR 16 and SR 21. Turn LEFT\, Go approximately 4 miles to Barker Road (north side of road — on the right as you are going west on SR 16). This will be just east of the main gate of Camp Blanding. \nThere is no fee\, but everyone will need proper PICTURE ID – e.g. driver’s license to get into Camp Blanding. Bring your binoculars\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, snacks and plenty of water. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Andrew Schumann\, Duval Audubon Conservation Director \nKingsley Plantation is the site of a former estate owned by Zephaniah Kingsley\, who spent 25 years there. It is now part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. \nResident birds include Pileated Woodpecker\, Brown Pelican\, Double-crested Cormorant\, Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Snowy Egret\, Little Blue Heron\, Tricolored Heron\, Clapper Rail\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Black-crowned Night Heron\, vultures\, Osprey\, Eastern Screech Owl\, Great Horned Owl\, Barred Owl\, and many more. \nLocation: 11676 Palmetto Ave\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226. No fee. \nDirections: From I-95 or I-295 East Beltway\, exit at Heckscher Drive and go east. After passing the St. Johns River Ferry landing on your right\, turn left 1/2 mile later at the brown National Park Service sign onto Fort George Island. Follow the signs on the road leading to the Kingsley Plantation parking lot. You will travel down a 2-mile dirt road. Restrooms are available at this site.

SUMMARY:Open House and Volunteer Work Day at Crosby Sanctuary
DESCRIPTION:The gates to Crosby Sanctuary will be open from 8-12 for visitors to enjoy the bird garden and walk the trails\, as well as for volunteers to conduct projects and maintenance. Please parallel park on Aquarius Concourse on the same side of the road as the Sanctuary. \nCrosby Sanctuary (limited access/no fee) is a “hotspot” on eBird and a “project” on iNaturalist. We have documented over 150 bird species on eBird and 300 plant species on iNaturalist. We also have active North American beavers on the property. \nIMPORTANT: Please wear close-toed shoes or boots (for your safety\, no sandals or flip-flops\, please)\, and bring your own water\, sunscreen\, bug spray\, and a hat if desired. \nYou can access a printable map of the preserve here. \nNOTE: The entrance is in the middle of the neighborhood – please park inside the gate (limit six vehicles) or on the NW side of the street (same side as the sanctuary).
