It is now part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. \nResident birds include Pileated Woodpecker\, Brown Pelican\, Double-crested Cormorant\, Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Snowy Egret\, Little Blue Heron\, Tricolored Heron\, Clapper Rail\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Black-crowned Night Heron\, vultures\, Osprey\, Eastern Screech Owl\, Great Horned Owl\, Barred Owl\, and many more. \nLocation: 11676 Palmetto Ave\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226. No fee. \nDirections: From I-95 or I-295 East Beltway\, exit at Heckscher Drive and go east. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Huguenot Memorial Park ($5 per vehicle)
DESCRIPTION:Co-leaders: Maggie Paxson & Tim Hardin (Alachua Audubon) with William Hoeck & Jessica Dyszel (Duval Audubon) \nMeet at the parking lot at 30°24’44.2″N 81°25’10.7″W to consolidate cars and head to the beach. 4WD will be preferable for beach driving to get to the north side of the park. Please ONLY drive on the beach if your vehicle is appropriately equipped and at your discretion. \nWinter birding can be especially productive with an excellent diversity of birds and much lower traffic on the beach. Targets include overwintering gulls\, terns\, waterfowl\, and shorebirds\, including the rare-in-Florida Purple Sandpipers and the rare-but-local Saltmarsh Sparrows. Other potential targets include Scoters\, Northern Gannets\, Piping and Snowy Plovers\, Nelson’s Sparrow\, and the Ash-throated Flycatcher. \nEntry to Huguenot Park is $5 per vehicle. Participants should bring water\, sunscreen\, binoculars\, and comfortable footwear for walking in soft\, sometimes wet\, uneven sands. Waterproof footwear is recommended. \nIf you choose to stay after Huguenot\, we will break for lunch at noon. Bring your own food or eat at a nearby restaurant\, such as Billy Jacks (BBQ)\, and carry on to other locations. \nThere are multiple options nearby Huguenot for afternoon trips within a 15-minute drive radius\, including Big Talbot/Spoonbill Pond\, Little Talbot\, Fort George Island/Kingsley Plantation\, Heritage River Road. Spoonbill Pond may have a chance for Marbled Godwits and Marsh Sparrows during high tide. Fort George Island is a nice drive-through for Painted Buntings. A ferry ride ($6 per person) can also take you across the river\, or you can drive around for access to Hanna Park\, Jax Arboretum\, Theodore Roosevelt Park\, Spanish Pond\, and Fort Caroline. SUMMARY:Field Trip: Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers at Camp Blanding WMA
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Allan Hallman (FWC) \nCamp Blanding WMA is 56\,197 acres located in western Clay County\, east of Starke. The northern half of the area is planted pine plantations with remnant mature pines that support red-cockaded woodpeckers. Bottomland hardwood forests occur along the headwaters of Black Creek. The southern half of the area includes several thousand acres of sandhills\, with plentiful white-tailed deer and turkey. \nOur main purpose for this trip is to visit a cluster site and learn about the life of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Other birds we will look for: Red-headed Woodpecker\, Kestrel\, Sandhill Cranes\, Brown-headed Nuthatch\, and Northern Bobwhite Quail. \nVisiting the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers is usually 2-3 hours. We will then proceed to travel across to Camp Blanding where we will visit the many lakes and learn about the water systems of Camp Blanding and look for waterfowl. This optional activity usually wraps up around 2:00 pm. \nWhere to meet: We are meeting at the intersection of Barker Rd and SR 16 at 8:00 am\, across the street from the main entrance of Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. \nPLEASE DON’T BE LATE as the gates will be locked after entry. Once we sign in and drive into the WMA\, there will not be another restroom. \nDO NOT GO TO THE CAMP BLANDING MAIN ENTRANCE! FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS BELOW TO OUR MEETING SPOT: \nComing from Jacksonville:\nTake Blanding Blvd (SR21) south through Orange Park\, and Middleburg. Continue south on SR 21 until you get to the intersection of SR 16 and SR 21. Turn Right (Heading west). Go approximately 4 miles to Barker Road (north side of road\, just east of the main gate of Camp Blanding). We will meet there\, then figure out riding options. \nComing from Starke:\nTake SR 16 east from Starke. Continue East until you reach Camp Blanding past the junction of CR230 and CR 225 (From Lawtey). Pass the Sunoco Gas station on the right. Go approximately 1 mile\, turn LEFT onto Barker Road (FWC – Camp Blanding WMA sign – Green in color). There is a gate there\, which will be open for the group. \nFrom Keystone Heights:\nTake CR 21 (Blanding Blvd) NORTH until you hit SR 16 and SR 21. Turn LEFT\, Go approximately 4 miles to Barker Road (north side of road — on the right as you are going west on SR 16). This will be just east of the main gate of Camp Blanding. \nThere is no fee\, but everyone will need proper PICTURE ID – e.g. driver’s license to get into Camp Blanding. Bring your binoculars\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, snacks and plenty of water. DESCRIPTION:Duval Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding outing for the Florida Young Birders Club (FYBC)-Northeast Florida Chapter at Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve on Sunday\, November 9th from 8-10am. FYBC is a membership organization geared towards young birders ages 9-17\, but you do not need to be a member to go birding with us for this outing. This walk will be led by Will Misner\, youth representative of the FYBC-Northeast Florida Chapter\, and David Doran\, Duval Audubon Society’s Director of Education and Youth Outreach. \nYou can learn more about Florida Young Birders Club\, here: floridayoungbirders.org. Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve is full of both year-round and migratory songbirds that inhabit its pine forests\, which are unique to the Southeast. We will especially keep an eye out for the Brown-headed Nuthatch\, a bird specific to this preserve’s habitat. \nRegister at https://tinyurl.com/fybcjulingtoncreekpreserve to connect with other young birders in Northeast Florida! \nPlease plan to have at least one adult joining each young birder or group of young birders who are signing up together. You will be asked to list all young birder(s) and adult(s) in your registration; you may relist the adult’s email if a young birder does not have an email or prefers not to share it. \nWhat to bring: Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes to bird along the trails. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, water\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, and snacks. There is no entrance fee. \nWhere to meet: Meet at the Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve parking lot at 8am. SUMMARY:Bird Walk for Beginners at Fort Caroline National Memorial
DESCRIPTION:Duval Audubon is again leading monthly walks for novice birders at Fort Caroline National Memorial. Of course\, experienced birders are welcome too! \nFort Caroline is a great migration hot spot – part of the National Park Service’s Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve; some of the last untouched coastal habitat in northeast Florida. We will bird around the park. Depending on the time of year\, we might see painted buntings\, migrant warblers\, a number of woodpecker species and two or three types of vireo. \nMeet at Fort Caroline National Memorial’s Visitor’s Center\, sign in\, then get some good birds. DESCRIPTION:Leader: Andrew Schumann\, Duval Audubon Conservation Director \nKingsley Plantation is the site of a former estate owned by Zephaniah Kingsley\, who spent 25 years there. It is now part of the Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve managed by the U.S. National Park Service. \nResident birds include Pileated Woodpecker\, Brown Pelican\, Double-crested Cormorant\, Great Blue Heron\, Great Egret\, Snowy Egret\, Little Blue Heron\, Tricolored Heron\, Clapper Rail\, Yellow-throated Warbler\, Black-crowned Night Heron\, vultures\, Osprey\, Eastern Screech Owl\, Great Horned Owl\, Barred Owl\, and many more. \nLocation: 11676 Palmetto Ave\, Jacksonville\, FL 32226. No fee. \nDirections: From I-95 or I-295 East Beltway\, exit at Heckscher Drive and go east. After passing the St. Johns River Ferry landing on your right\, turn left 1/2 mile later at the brown National Park Service sign onto Fort George Island. Follow the signs on the road leading to the Kingsley Plantation parking lot. You will travel down a 2-mile dirt road. Restrooms are available at this site.
