SUMMARY:Duval Audubon Society | Florida Young Birders Club Birding Outing at Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve
DESCRIPTION:Duval Audubon Society is sponsoring a birding outing for the Florida Young Birders Club (FYBC)-Northeast Florida Chapter at Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve on Sunday\, November 9th from 8-10am. FYBC is a membership organization geared towards young birders ages 9-17\, but you do not need to be a member to go birding with us for this outing. This walk will be led by Will Misner\, youth representative of the FYBC-Northeast Florida Chapter\, and David Doran\, Duval Audubon Society’s Director of Education and Youth Outreach. \nYou can learn more about Florida Young Birders Club\, here: floridayoungbirders.org. Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve is full of both year-round and migratory songbirds that inhabit its pine forests\, which are unique to the Southeast. We will especially keep an eye out for the Brown-headed Nuthatch\, a bird specific to this preserve’s habitat. \nRegister at https://tinyurl.com/fybcjulingtoncreekpreserve to connect with other young birders in Northeast Florida! \nPlease plan to have at least one adult joining each young birder or group of young birders who are signing up together. You will be asked to list all young birder(s) and adult(s) in your registration; you may relist the adult’s email if a young birder does not have an email or prefers not to share it. \nWhat to bring: Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes to bird along the trails. Bring your binoculars if you have them\, water\, insect repellent\, sunscreen\, and snacks. There is no entrance fee. \nWhere to meet: Meet at the Julington-Durbin Creek Preserve parking lot at 8am. There is a portable toilet at the parking lot if needed. \nAddress: 13130 Bartram Park Blvd\, Jacksonville\, FL 32223 \nQuestions: Contact David at david.doran@duvalaudubon.org or Will at misnerwill@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Field Trip: Red-Cockaded Woodpeckers at Camp Blanding WMA
DESCRIPTION:Leader: Allan Hallman (FWC) \nCamp Blanding WMA is 56\,197 acres located in western Clay County\, east of Starke. The northern half of the area is planted pine plantations with remnant mature pines that support red-cockaded woodpeckers. Bottomland hardwood forests occur along the headwaters of Black Creek. The southern half of the area includes several thousand acres of sandhills\, with plentiful white-tailed deer and turkey. \nOur main purpose for this trip is to visit a cluster site and learn about the life of Red-cockaded Woodpeckers. Other birds we will look for: Red-headed Woodpecker\, Kestrel\, Sandhill Cranes\, Brown-headed Nuthatch\, and Northern Bobwhite Quail. \nVisiting the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers is usually 2-3 hours. We will then proceed to travel across to Camp Blanding where we will visit the many lakes and learn about the water systems of Camp Blanding and look for waterfowl. This optional activity usually wraps up around 2:00 pm. \nWhere to meet: We are meeting at the intersection of Barker Rd and SR 16 at 8:00 am\, across the street from the main entrance of Camp Blanding Joint Training Center. \nPLEASE DON’T BE LATE as the gates will be locked after entry. Once we sign in and drive into the WMA\, there will not be another restroom. \nDO NOT GO TO THE CAMP BLANDING MAIN ENTRANCE! Continue East until you reach Camp Blanding past the junction of CR230 and CR 225 (From Lawtey). Pass the Sunoco Gas station on the right. Go approximately 1 mile\, turn LEFT onto Barker Road (FWC – Camp Blanding WMA sign – Green in color).
