• 2024: A Great Year for Duval Audubon Society

The end of the year is a perfect time to reflect on everything our chapter has accomplished, especially in the area of conservation. Duval Audubon’s mission is “connecting people with nature, restoring and conserving natural ecosystems, focusing on birds and other wildlife,” and all of our work this year (and every year) has been centered around this mission.

Here are a few recent highlights from this year:

    Lights Out Northeast Florida

    • AF Assembly 2024 LONF Ed award Kristen Kosik and EFOur Lights Out Northeast Florida initiative (LONF) in partnership with Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens and St. Johns Regional Audubon Society completed its fourth year of window collision monitoring in the downtown Jacksonville area.
    • In November, LONF received Audubon Florida’s 2024 Education Award for its successful outreach efforts in the community. The data collected by our dedicated LONF volunteers has been shared in a variety of ways with City decision makers, business leaders, building managers, and homeowners to alert them to the perils of artificial lighting and window reflections to birds, with the goal of influencing the entire community to work towards helping more wild birds survive by reducing nighttime lighting and making windows safe for birds.
    • The LONF team also facilitated conversations between the Jacksonville Jaguars leadership and top experts at the American Bird Conservancy with the aim of making sure that the new Jaguars stadium is designed with bird safety in mind.
    • The team worked with Jacksonville’s Museum of Science and History to install “Feather Friendly” visual markers on their courtyard windows to protect birds from window strikes by making the windows visible to birds.
