Speaker: Mary Ellen Petraska, Avian Wildlife Specialist at White Oak Conservation.

Mary Ellen Petraska was born in Vermont and raised in the Florida keys, where she discovered her passion for avifauna through volunteering at a wild bird rehabilitation center at a young age. After graduating high school, she pursued a career in zookeeping while attending the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo in Gainesville, Florida. Upon acquiring an Associates in Science degree in Zoo Animal Technology, she was chosen for an 8-month internship at White Oak Conservation Foundation and has been an Avian Wildlife Specialist there for the past four years. Mary Ellen has worked towards breeding and conserving some of the worlds most endangered birds, from the large Double-wattled Cassowarys to some of the smallest like Florida Grasshopper Sparrows.
